What we do

In 2010 we homed 60 cats and 39 kittens  all of which without the help of the local branch may well have ended up homeless, suffering, or even worse! In March 2010 we ran a free neutering scheme open to members of the public on benefits/job seekers allowance/low income and neutered a total of 72 cats comprising 21 male and 51 female cats/kittens. Not bad!!

This year we have noticed an escalation in the number of requests for neutering assistance since the early Summer. This may in part be due to the successful 5 day RSPCA Community Animal Days news at the end of June, but also because we have advertised our help more.

As you can imagine the areas we work with and the people and cats we deal with are all very diverse, but one thing is for sure - they need our help! Without the branch's cat work there would be lots more unhappy cats across the area!

  • We rescue and rehome cats and kittens in our area, which may have come in for various reasons - sometimes people move and leave their cat, sometimes their owner dies, sometimes they are found wandering or injured, and sometimes they are handed in when people just cant cope anymore!
  • We help with feral colonies - these can be a big problem in both urban and rural areas, and our dedicated team of volunteers do their best to trap, neuter, and relocate (where possible) these feral cats.
  • We may also be able to assist people on low incomes or pensions who need help with costs of neutering their cat or kitten.
  • We care for long term ill and elderly cats - we're always looking for homes for these, but this is a difficult task, and in the mean time they need to be looked after and given their medication when necessary!
  • We also run a "Pensioner cats for Pensioners" Scheme. This gives a longer life to elderly cats who sadly find themselves without a home. It also gives a feline companion to elderly people. We guarantee to pay vet fees for the cat, a point which would often deter the elderly from taking a cat. This scheme brings great contentment on both sides.
