Happy New Year 2012
30th anniversary of Gosport Cats Protection
As we welcome in 2012 and look ahead to the challenges it brings we reflect on our efforts in the last year, our achievements and the joy that cats bring to our lives.
Crop circles were seen in Gosport in our fundraising programme along with car boot and driveway sales, stalls at fetes, fayres, in and outside shops and just about anywhere we could set up a table of Cats Protection goodies! You’ve shown how clever you are at our quiz nights, supported another sponsored walk at Goodwood and enjoyed bargain hunting at our Easter and Christmas fayres. Thank you for your help and support at our very varied events and we look forward to seeing you in the coming year.
2011 was our busiest year yet with a huge increase in the number of unwanted cats and kittens and a noticeable increase in requests for us to take in pregnant cats. Kitten season started early and with the mild weather we were taking in kittens right up to December. All this placed huge pressures on Gosport Cats Protection in terms of space for all these feline families, money for their care and veterinary treatment, and the time involved for our fosterers. Taking a litter of five lively, boisterous (and adorable) kittens to the vets for vaccinations and microchipping is quite a task!
Cats Protection champions neutering as the only effective way to reduce the number of unwanted cats in the UK but sadly the message doesn't always get through. We wanted to take positive action and a generous legacy from our dear friend Maureen Mayer enabled us to run a £5 neutering campaign. The £5 campaign ran during October 2011 and we are pleased that a total of 120 cats and kittens were neutered under the campaign with ages ranging from 4 months to 5 years.
Every cat that comes into Cats Protection care is much loved and of course receives necessary veterinary care. We work hard to match every cat up with the purrfect home. It’s incredible that in continuing difficult times we homed 89 cats in permanent and loving homes in 2011. Some of these cats were just so lovely that their fosterers couldn’t bear to be parted from them and adopted them! Very much a case of the cat who came to stay….
We start 2012 with 10 cats and kittens in care, all of whom need new homes, and sadly a long waiting list of cats needing to come into our care. However we remain positive and continue to work together for the welfare of all cats as Gosport branch has done over the last 30 years.
A very happy new year to you all and we look forward to your continued support in 2012.
