Step 1: Enquiry
Give us a call on (01438) 228877 or drop us an email, telling us what type of cat you are looking
for. On receipt of your details, our Homing Officer or Home Visitor will get back to you as soon as possible but within 3 working days to have a chat and discuss your requirements.
Step 2: Home visit
Not every cat will suit your specific environment. We carry out a home visit to ensure that we find
a cat that fits your circumstances. Home visits are also a chance for you to ask questions and
discuss the ins and outs of homing a CP cat. You will generally need to live within our catchment area, which is postcodes SG1 to SG7.
Step 3: The right cat or kitten for you
Once you've had your home visit, our Homing Officer will run through the details of any suitable
cat(s) and will give you details to arrange to visit them.
Step 4: Taking home your new family member
Once you've chosen your kitty, you can collect it after 24 hours, and take it home!
It's an expensive business getting a cat ready for adoption as we neuter, vaccinate (against cat flu,
Enteritis, leukaemia etc.), microchip, worm, de-flea and vet check every cat that we rehome. Every cat
or kitten adopted also comes with 4 weeks' free pet insurance.
Step 5: Adoption Fee
We do everything we can to ensure that every cat in our care receives only the very best standards of love and care whilst they are with us. While the love and attention they get comes free, other aspects such as veterinary treatment, neutering, vaccinating, Microchipping, food and litter have to be paid for – the average cost of a cat during it’s time in our care is about £230. That is why we ask for an adoption fee of £85 that allows us to carry on helping more and more cats that desperately need us.
Step 6: Donations
If you are able to give us a donation on top of paying the fee, then this will help towards the care and treatment of the next cat we take into our care. A donation also helps us to claim back Gift Aid. This means we are able to help cat after unwanted, lost or stray cat in North Hertfordshire for the future.

Other Points to Note
Adopting a kitten
Please note that we do not normally rehome kittens to families with children under 5 years old.
Also, when adopting a kitten from Cats Protection you must agree to get the kitten neutered at between 4 and 6 months of age, generally at your expense.
If you or your family are out at work all day, we would prefer you to adopt a pair of
kittens (not a single one) or a slightly older / adult cat or pair of cats.
Busy roads
It's our policy not to place our cats or kittens in homes which are near busy / main roads.
Free access via a catflap
Apart from cats who have special needs, all of our cats and kittens must go to homes where they
will have free access to the outdoors where they can exhibit their natural behaviours.
Our catchment area
To adopt from our Branch, you will generally need to live within our catchment area, which is postcodes
SG1 to SG7. If you live outside this area and are interested in a specific cat, please give us a call so we can arrange a home visit by your local branch or visit the main Cats Protection website for further information.
