What we do

The North Hertfordshire Branch of Cats Protection was established in May 2000, and always welcome new members and volunteers. We form part of Cats Protection - which is made up of  local volunteer branches (like ours) and Adoption Centres across the UK.

Cats Protection’s vision is to ensure that every cat is given the chance of a life where it will be treated with kindness and an understanding of its needs.

Cats Protection’s three main objectives are:-
To find good homes for cats in need
To support and encourage the neutering of cats
To improve people’s understanding of cats and their care

National statistics
We have over 7,000 cats and kittens in our care at any time.
We rehome and reunite 55,500 cats every year.
We help to neuter 150,000 cats per year.
We have some 29 adoption centres spread across the UK.
We have 256 voluntary-run branches nationwide.
We have 6,000 active volunteers.
We reunite 3,500 cats with their rightful owners every year.
Our helpline answers over 100,000 calls per annum.

Our volunteers give us around 3.5 million hours each year

The Cats Protection network helps over 200,000 cats and kittens every year.

We never put a healthy cat to sleep and aim to find a loving home for every cat in our care.

The North Hertfordshire Branch covers a wide area for cat welfare - postcodes SG1 to SG7 – and we aim to help as many felines as we possibly can. In 2011 we re-homed 85 cats and kittens.

We also transferred 4 indoor cats to North London CP adoption centre for homing.

This is slightly down on 2010 but a great achievement taking into account both the economic situation and our  shortage of welfare volunteers. See our volunteer page!

Except for a discretionary grant from the National Cat Centre at the beginning of each year, our branch is completely self-funding. The number of cats and kittens we can help is entirely dependent on how much money our fund-raising team is able to raise and how many donations we receive.

We have a small team of fosterers, some with outdoor cat cabins, others fostering indoors in a spare room, we're able to accommodate around 15 cats and kittens at any one time plus 10 cats that are ready for homing and that can be viewed at our cattery pens.

We are looking for further committed fosterers, both to accommodate outdoor and indoor cabins, as well as volunteers to help in all sorts of areas.

If you live in North Hertfordshire and would like to become a member, adopt a cat or have some time to spare, please do get in touch as we would really love to hear from you!
