I have found a cat, what should I do?
If you think you have found a cat...
If you have found a sick or injured cat (or any animal!) the best thing to do is take it to the vets as soon as possible.
Is it a Stray?
You might also consider some or all of the following:
- If you are able to, pop a paper collar on the cat asking any owner to conatct you. Click here for a template or make your own, just tape to the ends of the collar.
- If possible, take the cat to a vet who will check for a microchip, and you can ask if anyone has reported a similar cat missing. Alternatively we have volunteers in and around the Southampton area who are able to scan cats for microchips where they are.
- If no microchip is found, you could produce some small "Cat Found" leaflets to be put in newsagents and distri.buted in the area it was found.
- Register the cat on www.petfinderonline.co.uk and www.animalsearchuk.com. Both of these websites are FREE
- Please post on our facebook page , there is a very active 'Lost & Found' group we can direct you to.
Doing these things is often very successful in reuniting a cat with its owners and it is important that these procedures are carried out before Cats Protection takes the cat in for re-homing. Once we take in a cat, we must keep it for at least seven days before we can re-home it.
