ASSISTANCE WITH THE COSTS OF NEUTERING YOUR CAT.

During June and July 2011 South Birmingham Cats Protection ran a very successful Neutering Scheme and many caring owners contacted us for vouchers which enabled them to get their pets neutered, sometimes at no extra charge. During these two months many hundreds of cats were neutered or spayed with our help, and this will hopefully have limited, if only to a small extent, the growing population of ferals and unwanted strays in South Birmingham.

From 1st August 2011, the help we provide to owners who wish to neuter their cats is offered through our Assisted Neutering Scheme.  The vouchers can be used at any veterinary practice in our area. The vouchers are available to cat owners who are in receipt of benefit payments, and in certain other circumstances, which our volunteers will talk to you about when you call.

The voucher for a female cat is valued at £26 and vets will accept this against the cost of neutering females.  There will be a top up fee to pay and we advise that owners eligible for a voucher, telephone the vet they intend to use and make themselves aware of the additional cost for which they will be liable. There may be a further extra charge to pay directly to the vet if the cat is pregnant.

The voucher for a male cat is worth £20 and vets will accept this against the cost of neutering a male cat. Again there will be a top up fee to pay and owners should make themselves aware of this cost before they take their pet to the vet for the operation.

All owners will be responsible for the transport of their pet to and from the vets and for following the vet's instructions on care for their pet before and after the operation.

If you have an un-neutered cat please ring our Helpline, 0845 3711854, give your name, address, telephone number, age and sex of your cat. We will then return your call. Please note we cannot return your call if your phone will not accept withheld numbers.

It is as important for males to be neutered as females. All cats will be happier and much healthier after the operation.

RESCUE TEAM FOSTERERS NEEDED - B&B accommodation for recuperating ferals

Feral cats are a huge problem in South Birmingham and we have now formed a TNR Team that aims to catch and neuter as many feral cats as possible. Traps are set to catch the cats and they are then taken to vets to be spayed or castrated.  Some cats need to be kept overnight prior to the operation and all need to recuperate in a quiet safe pen before they are returned to their colony. Although they will continue to live as ferals they will not be responsible for any more kittens joining the group and thus perpetuating the colony.

Unlike our regular Fosterers, Rescue Team Fosterers will be looking after these cats for very short periods and the TNR Team will be responsible for delivering and collecting the cats.  Cats Protection will provide pens, kit and food and expenses will be paid.

South Birmingham is taking on a huge commitment in attempting to reduce the number of feral cats in the suburbs and we need all the help we can get to meet our targets.

If you are interested in helping and have an area, such as a garden, garage or shed, where a pen or pens could be put, please do contact our Helpline on 0845 3711854 or e-mail the Branch at southbham.cats.org.uk
