We are desperate for new Fosterers so if you want to know what is involved in looking after cats that are waiting to be homed read on...
Sunday 12th June 2011
Well, I've been fostering for Torbay and District Cats Protection for 8 months now, and have already met many cat characters. I have had cats all my life, and spent many teenage years saving feral kittens on the streets of London. Now my children are older I've decided to foster cats and have decided to document the smiles that they bring!
Rain! This morning I am looking forward to taking on a new family of cats, but checking the pen before leaving home to pick up the cats, I have realized that I left one of the covers off one of the windows and the much needed rain has started to flood the doorway - so frantic mopping up is needed before I can leave to meet our homing officer.
We arrive to collect the cats completely drenched - mum, dad and three kits later, after some struggles I arrive home with my new lodgers. Pen organized with litter, biscuits and fresh water, I'm ready to let them out of their baskets. What will they be like????
Glad to say they are all very friendly and pleased to see me, although we are all very damp, much stroking goes on. The kittens begin to tuck into their biscuits while mum and dad look on. Naming begins for the two without a name, and within a few minutes it seems as though we have been friends for ages! - I love naming cats and kittens, my daughters and I tend to agree straight away, we've only ever had one disagreement, and that was with the name Sparky for a black kitten, who turned out to be a girl so we changed her name anyway!!
Luckily, my big pen is only two steps from the back door, so we managed several trips to say hello without getting too wet today. All settled in very well!! We tend to let them settle in for a few days before visiting the vet for a general health check, unless there is any obvious problem, then it's off to the vet asap. Mum will need neutering - as I'm at work during the week one of the other fosterers will pop her to the vet for me. The others will need their injections and worming at the end of the week, and tomorrow I'll be giving them a flea treatment. Within the week they should be ready for homing. Will keep you up to date as the week progresses!! >"<
