Helping older cats

Cats Protection cares for cats of all ages but sometimes it is more difficult to find a suitable home for an older cat.  Truro & District Branch has specialised over the last 2 decades ih helping older cats in our area. We aim to find happy permanent homes for senior cats who suddenly find themselves homeless through no fault of their own. In certain circumstances our Branch makes it easier for adopters to take on an older cat by undertaking to pay any veterinary bills should they arise. This way we can help a senior cat find a happy home without the adopter having to face the potential burden of veterinary bills. A positive outcome for cat and owner alike.

Why do so many older cats find themselves homeless in Cornwall? The South West has the highest number of households with a cat - 28 per cent, whilst Cornwall as a county has the second highest number of over 60's in the UK population. Sadly, elderly cat owners sometimes find themselves in circumstances where they have to give up their much-loved pets. Frequently any cats involved are past the first flush of youth and friends, neighbours or relations are unable to take on the cat. It is in situations such as these where Cats Protection is asked to assist and our Branch motto says ....we care about cats and we will help if we can.

Help us create more happy tails and Support Our Seniors For an annual minimum donation of £5 our Senior Cats Co-ordinator will send you a newsheet updating you on the senior cats we have helped. Your donation will also help towards Branch costs helping these older cats.  Our Branch is run entirely by volunteers and all our funds are raised through local fundraising. Here are just a few examples of the senior cats we have helped

JamieJamie

This handsome elderly cat was found as a stray covered in oil, with lots of his fur missing and a very sore nose. The people who found him would have liked to keep him but he did not get on with their cat. He now lives happily in a new home in rural Cornwall and is starting to grow back his beautiful coat.

He still has problems with his nose but this is being monitored with regular health checks at the vet. He is a lovely gentle cat who is enjoying life in his new home and has become very attached to the other cats he now lives with.

HarryHarry

A playful senior who is full of fun even though he has a very serious health condition which affects his teeth and gums.  He is having regular check ups by the vet to make sure that his condition is now under control. Harry makes no fuss about his condition and takes his daily medication very gently.

He may well have to have more teeth extracted in the near future but his owner says that he is a lovely boy who eats well and loves you to pieces.

Mr BlackMr Black

He came into our care when his owner was no longer able to care for him.  This beautiful glossy cat is now settling into his new home. He is probably about 18 years old and is in good health and eats well although he has a slight cough which is being checked regularly by the vet. He enjoys to sit and watch out of the window to see the other cats he lives with climbing trees. His new owner says he is a quiet gentle cat who is a bit of a thinker. He will occasionally play a game but likes to remain dignified while playing.

WiggsyWiggsy

Wiggsy is an elderly cat who came into care with several veterinary problems. She has now recovered from a thyroid operation and apart from regular injections she is a much happier cat.

Wiggsy is very loving and likes to be with the other cats in her adopted home where she has a warm comfortable bed and lots of cuddles.  You can see her here paddling away with happy feet!

GingerGinger

This lovely boy is 18 years old and he came to us with his friend Fluff when his owners had to go into residential care and were unable to take their pets with them.

Ginger is very happy with his new owner and has made a particular chair and the spotted bed his own.
