ANTI FREEZE POISONING

Sadly not all our stories are happy ones. You may have read an article recently in the newspapers regarding cats in Portsoy being poisoned by antifreeze. Cats are often attracted to pools of antifreeze because it is a clear, sweet tasting liquid. Items like anti-freeze and screen-washes are hazardous to cats, and cana cause renal failure and even death. Cats Protection advise people to thorougly mop up any pools of antifreeze that are spilled or left on the road after working on their cars. Please store any containers filled with antifreeze well out of cats reach. Once containers are empty it is a good idea to place in sealed up bags before putting in the bin. Symptoms of antifreeze poisoning include dizziness, loss of coordination and vomiting. If your cat shows any of these signs please take your cat to your local vet immediately.

<p>In Turriff this year in the past couple of months we have had two cats poisoned by antifreeze.&nbsp;&nbsp; The S.S.P.C.A. were contacted by the owners who believe their cats may have been poisoned deliberately.

Can we please ask everyone who is handling antifreeze to be very careful about spilling any antifreeze and keeping it out of reach of any pets.

There is a website you can log on to sign a petition to get a bittering agent added to antifreeze. Please go to www.antifreezekills.co.uk
