Adopt a cat

Our Adoption Centre homes cats to York and the surrounding areas. If you are unsure as to whether you live in our catchment area, please give us a ring on 01904 760356.

So what does it take to offer one or more of our lovely cats a home?

Here’s the process:

  • Come and visit us at our Adoption Centre. We’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have, and recommend the cats or kittens we think might be suitable for you. Some of our cats may be perfectly at ease sharing a home with children or other animals, where others will need a quieter environment. Let us know what you are hoping to find so we can help to choose the right companion for you.

  • Feast your eyes on our current feline crop, and ask to meet any you think you might like to reserve. You may find a proportion of our cats have an 'Unavailable' sign on their pen. This could mean the cat in question was found as a stray in which case we will hold onto them for two weeks, allowing any owner the chance to come forward and claim them. A cat will also be 'unavailable' until they have been vet checked. You will not be able to meet or reserve unavailable cats. If you have young children, we would like them to come and meet your preferred cat or kitten before you reserve them, just so we can be sure everyone gets along!

  • Reserve your cat of choice, and we can arrange your home visit. This is just to ensure that the area you live in is suitable and safe for the cat you have chosen. If you live in rented accommodation, we will need a letter from the landlord or housing association, granting permission for a cat in the property. This will need to be seen before the cat is taken home.

  • We ask for a £50 adoption fee when re-homing a cat. This is to help cover the basic day-to-day care costs, which includes de-fleaing and worming. We also vaccinate, microchip, blood test (those at risk) and neuter (if old enough) the cats that we take in. It can cost us £150 or more to ready a cat for re-homing, so if you feel able to make a donation on top of the adoption fee, it would of course be most gratefully recieved. We know times are hard at the moment so thank you for deciding to adopt a Cats Protection cat.

  • If your home visit is successful, you can come and collect your cat. Just don’t forget to bring a good-sized, stable cat carrier with you. If you wish to purchase one from us, we have both new and second-hand carriers available for sale.

We are happy to offer help and advice after homing, so if you have any concerns or questions please don't hesitate to get in touch.

If you would like to offer one or more of our cats a home, please call us or drop in to the Adoption Centre. You do not need to make an appointment. We are open from 11.00am – 3.00pm, seven days a week.

And...DON'T FORGET to check out our York Cats Protection Facebook group. We've photos a-plenty of each and every one of our fantastic cats available for homing - a handful of video clips too! There's information on common cat-related issues (parasites, vaccinations etc) as well as updates on upcoming events and our exciting sponsorship schemes. It's a great space for asking questions; even better, for sharing news of your own furred feline. There's nothing we relish quite so much as getting a peek at a former York CP resident, looking thoroughly content at home. So, to gain a more in-depth picture of the cat (or cats) you may one day hope to call your own, head on over to Facebook and look us up. We guarantee much cat-loving indulgence lies ahead.
