Ronnie & Reggie

We just thought we would let you know how Ronnie and Reggie are getting on since we took them home in November.

Basically they are getting on great!  When we got them home they settled into their new bed and seemed to enjoy us tickling behind their ears! It was going so well that we thought we could go out and leave then to settle.  That was the last we saw of them for a couple of days! We should have known they would have found the smallest and only gap behind the kitchen units.  We did panic as we pulled all the boards away, thinking they must have found a way out of the house by some sort of  secret cat tunnel in a  “great escape”! Finally after pulling away the last board we saw two pairs of eyes staring back at us.  What a relief that was. The next few days were battle of wits as we tried to entice them out and stop them from going back into hiding.  We heard them at night as they played with their toys, jumping around and making a noise as we tried to get off to sleep.  In the morning the food was gone and they were back safe under the cabinets.  Even when I thought we had tricked them and managed to block the gaps they still managed to pull everything apart again and do things as they wanted!

In the end ignoring them proved to be the best policy – that and some roast chicken!  Eventually they got braver and braver, especially for food and the odd treat of chicken, ham and on one occasion…sausages!  They now wanted to be with us – even if it was from a distance that would allow them to scamper back under a kitchen unit. They enjoy running up and down the stairs like a couple of elephants.  When they get tired of that, they come into the living room and stare at us.  They have a favourite arm chair and fight each other to get the place at back – Ronnie being particularly aggressive in getting a place where he can lie with his head on the chair arm – or Reggie’s tummy. This has become a bit of an evening ritual and they spend more time pushing and shoving each other than they do resting.

Neither cat is particularly dominant at the moment – they have great fun wrestling each other and chasing toy balls around the house.  Ronnie is definitely the mischievous one and Reggie pretends to be very regal and above the silly games Ronnie wants to play.  But, they look after each other – and always curl up together to go to sleep. Reggie does seem to protect Ronnie and will lie in front of him or even on top of him if he perceives they are under any threat.  They are beginning to come to us and let us touch and stroke them. They rarely hide away now. Reggie seems to be the one leading the way in this respect and hopefully it will not be long before they go the whole way and start climbing on our laps.

Anyway, they are doing well, much better than we expected at this stage, - we will send some pictures as soon as we can.

Best wishes,

Alistair & Sue Cunningham & Ronnie & Reggie
