Cat charity makes emergency appeal to deal with surge in unwanted cats

Cats Protection’s Bridgend Adoption Centre has today issued an emergency appeal in response to a dramatic fall in the number of cats being adopted from the centre and a rise in the number of abandoned cats and kittens needing urgent help from the centre.

The Bridgend Adoption Centre has seen homing figures fall by 26% for the first 4 months of this year, a trend which is continued through May.  The centre currently has 247 cats and kittens in its care with another 397 stray and unwanted cats and kittens on a waiting list.   As well as the slump in homing the centre has had to deal with an increased number of abandoned cats and kittens needing urgent medical attention and this has put a big strain on resources.

Some of the cats and kittens being cared for at the centre are

Harmoine, Harry and Tanzi, these are 3 of a litter of 6 kittens found abandoned in a box at only 4 weeks of age, the kittens were very poorly and sadly not all survived.  These lucky 3 are received lots of TLC from cat carer’s at the centre and should make a full recovery

Aruba, 2 yrs old female cat found in a rubbish box with her litter of 1 week old kittens, she was very traumatised and had a badly infected under arm collar injury.  Her injury was so severe that she needed several courses of antibiotics and a skin graft to repair the damage

Catherine, Charles, Cambridge and Champagne, were found huddled under a bush in a memorial garden on the royal wedding weekend, they were only 6 weeks old at the time and were very frightened of people.

Sue Dobbs Centre Manager said: “I have been managing the centre for 13 yrs and have never known the situation to be so dire, we are at breaking point if this continues we are going to struggle to help the many needy cats and kittens out there”.

All cats and kittens at centre are vet checked, neutered if old enough, vaccinated, microchipped, worm and flea treated and come with 4 weeks free pet plan insurance.

Please contact centre on 01656 724396 if you are interested in adopting a cat or kitten, or would like to make a donation to help us care for unwanted cats and kittens.
