Neutering

Cherwell branch had its first customer on September 3, 2007. This was Phoebe, a gorgeous two-year-old female cat living in Bicester. Since then we have worked tirelessly to endeavour to prevent kittens flooding the streets of Cherwell. Jasper is our latest recruit; a seven-month, male moggie and he will not be fathering any more kittens! Jasper is a very important customer as he is number 400 – yes 400 – we cannot believe our neutering campaign has been so successful and continues to gather speed at an alarming rate.
Approximately two thirds of the 400 are females. Now, we will do the arithmetic. As we all know ‘a female cat can, in just five years be responsible for over 20,000 descendents’ – we make that 5,333,333. If we have got this wrong please let us know! Wow, what a figure – we have prevented over five million unwanted kittens taking over the Cherwell area!
We meet and talk to so many people when trying to help with the neutering of their cats. It is an extremely rewarding job when you see how you can help people put an end to the line of never ending kittens. Every so often someone says something, which either brings a smile to the face or a tear.
In the early days a man called and said he was over run by cats and kittens from a local farm and he wanted to have them ‘neutralised’ – it made us smile for hours! On the other hand every so often,we are touched by how grateful people are for our help. One day, we had a call from a family and their care team. Their daughter had leukaemia and because of the breakdown of her immune system, the cats had to be neutered to stop them spraying in the house and spreading germs. The parents were not working, due to caring for their daughter. Usually it’s an animal story that brings tears to our eyes, but on this occasion it was a human story. We were so glad that we could pay for the cats to be neutered and deal with a financial burden that they did not need at such a terrible time.
We will finish with our usual plea – if you know anyone who is in receipt of means-tested benefits, a pension, low wages or is a student – please tell them about the voucher scheme. Alternatively, if you want to donate money to help us carry on with our neutering work please give us a call.
