Visiting the Adoption Centre

So you've made the decision! Now it's time to come and see us:

Our Adoption Centre is open every day for you to come along and have a look around, we would recommend that you give yourself at least an hour to have a look and bring along any family members who will be involved with the care of your new cat.

Just bear in mind a cat’s behaviour in their pen is not always a true representation of their real character. They are in an unfamiliar environment and may be taking time to get to know their new surroundings. For this reason some cats can appear apprehensive about saying hello but don’t let this put you off.

Remember their whole world has changed. They may not understand that you could be the one to change it back again for the better. Be patient, it pays dividends. When you meet for the first time please take things quietly and slowly, allowing the cat to come to you.

Why not take a virtual tour of the centre before you visit, this way you will know what to expect when you arrive.

All cats are not the same. It is very important to choose the right cat for your home to ensure that you are all happy together.

Age and sex
Kittens have more energy than older cats and will need more care initially. They need smaller more frequent meals, 4 a day to start with, until they are around six months of age. If you are introducing a new kitten into your home and you already have an older cat you will need to supervise the kitten and let your established cat get some peace and quiet at times. Older cats tend to be calmer and well adjusted, needing less supervision and will settle easily. The difference between male and female is down to personal preference, once a cat is neutered there is very little if no difference in behaviour.

Character
Cats characters are as different as you and I, they vary from the laid back lap cat to the excited and whizzy young adult who wants to look at everything right through to the feral who would like to live outside and just be friends when they hear the food can open!

Every new owner's needs are different
When you visit the centre talk to the staff and tell them what it is you are looking for. We will then try and match you to your perfect cat, you may not find the right one for you on your first visit....but then they usually pick you! Most cats love going outside and exploring, others prefer to spectate from a sunny window and some can't go outside at all. We will always try to find a cat to suit your situation.

Once you have chosen your cat we will make an appointment with you to have a chat about settling them into your home. This gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have thought of since your visit to us. We can advise you on food, cat litter, neutering and how to settle your cat in to their new home. We will then make the arrangments for you to collect your cat.
