Rehoming Success Story: Sylvester - Feb 2023

Sylvester was in the care of North Herts Cats Protection in 2022 and we homed him to his forever loving home. Their adopter has contacted us with an update:

We love our cats. We already had one rescue from just 5 weeks old with a very sad back story who struggled to warm to us but knew she was safe when we latterly took in a stray who sadly died a few years later. After a few years she began to spend more time with us and we took in two more rescues. These two from CP. A baby brother and sister who were abandoned with their Mum at 8 weeks old. After over 17 years, all three had grown very close, but as with time, sadly we said good night to our last one in October.

We waited a month and then looked to rescue some kittens again. CP were an obvious choice. The website is so easy to use. There were a number of cats and kittens. The little information sections were so warmly written. Clearly by fosterers who care for cats and pick up on their personalities and cheeky traites. That's when we saw Sylvester. A 6-7 year old DLH, mainly black fur with gorgeous long white whiskers, a white bib, feet and belly. He looked just like the cartoon cat and was well named by Paula of CP. He had 19 teeth missing, a bit of ear missing, permanent damage to his left eye from an ulcer as well as injuries from fighting. He'd been on the streets trying to survive on the streets for at least the first 5 years of his life. We got in touch and Paula talked to us about him and conducted our house check over WhatsApp, which was incredibly convenient. We arranged to meet Sylvester and drove to his foster home where he was living in a set of 8 pens with other CP cats.

He was amazingly affectionate. We fell in love. The paperwork came through within a week and we went and collected him. From the moment he arrived it was like he'd lived with us for years. Spending nighttime on the bed with us and days in the warmth of all his newly chosen beds around the home. He loves his toys, in particular a long colourful bit of chord. He dive bombs carpets and chases laser dots all over the place. All of this despite his arthritic hip. He has a special way of asking for food, or cuddles or playtime by gently raising his paw. It's so cute and, perhaps, self taught. We think he is very happy with us. We even wrote new words to the sylveter & tweetie pie song to match him ... and he is the real sweetie pie. We had great support from Paula at CP. In fact everyone we've ever spoken to at CP have always been really genuine and kind people. We would recommend them over and over and infact are hoping to still offer our forever home to a couple of kittens in the future, now that Sylvester is truly settled in.

They have written this lovely poem about Sylvester:

All to the verse tune of "I taut I Taw a Puddy Cat...."

Sylvesyer is a special puss
He is a sweetie pie
We know he wants to see us
But he's only got one eye
And when we go to pick him up
He might just spit and hiss
But thats okay because we will
Give him a great big kiss

We know that he won't scratch us
He's a sweetie underneath
And he would never bite us
As his missing 19 teeth
He's fluffy and adorable
A really handsome boy
We're going to buy him lots of treats
And lots of lovely toys

"I am that lovely furry cat
Sylvester is my name
I only have one aim in life
And that is very plain
I really love a cuddle
And lots of tasty treats
And I can't wait to snuggle
When I live with Sandra and Leigh"

I used to live out in the wild
A stray 'out on the roam'
So I popped into a hospice
To find a cosy home
Then Paula of the CP
Loved me and chose my name
I knew I'd want a forever home
Where it would be the same.

We're delighted to hear that Sylvester has settled in so well, and thank them so much for the kind words. If you've adopted a cat from North Herts Cats Protection and would like to send an update please contact us, we'd love to hear from you.
