Black Cat Awareness Day story - The story of Puss Puss

PussPussPuss Puss - so good they named her twice!

Puss Puss was a little stray black cat who found her way to a farm where she raised a litter of kittens that were around five months old when we were notified about them.  By that time, Puss Puss was pregnant again and needed to come into CP care to have her kittens in security and comfort.

The farm were happy to home two of the feral kittens and the other two were adopted by their fosterer, one now being quite tame, but the other is still very much feral and certainly knows that the best place in the winter is tucked up under the radiator in a cosy cat bed in the bedroom!  The farm also wanted to home Puss Puss after she had raised her next litter of kittens and was neutered.

Puss Puss gave birth to seven kittens, but one unfortunately didn’t survive more than a few days.  The other kittens thrived and when they were three weeks old, we introduced four two week old orphan kittens to Puss Puss, who just accepted them as her own and did a fantastic job of raising a whopping brood of ten kittens!

When the kittens had all been homed, and Puss Puss was neutered, the farm decided they no longer wanted her, so she was available for adoption.  As she was supposed to be returned to the farm, she had been let into the household and so she was able to live a normal life until the right home came along for her.  The family at the farm had named her Puss Puss so she kept the name because she had become accustomed to it.

She was a very loving little cat and spent hours on her fosterer’s mum’s lap being stroked.  (The fosterer’s mum has Alzheimer’s but she is at her happiest with a cat on her lap!)  Two families came along to meet Puss Puss with the intention of adopting her, but at both times, Puss Puss did not want to know them and made her way to mum’s lap!  Both families told the fosterer that they could not take her away and she had obviously bonded with the old lady!  So the clever cat stayed!

It seems that Puss Puss sealed her fate to continue to be a heroine for the branch.  She has in recent months given blood to save a cat’s life.  Our branch received a call from Moor Cottage vets desperate to find a blood donor for a young tabby male cat that had been involved in a road traffic accident.  He had lost so much blood and his blood count was 13 when it should have been 35.

Puss Puss was lounging on a chair in the garden and when her now owner went to pick her up, she stretched and yawned, not knowing what was about to happen.  She was taken directly to Moor Cottage vets in the hope that she was a match.  Her blood was used to save the young cat who had severe lacerations to his throat and tongue and desperately needed donated blood.

After the procedure Puss Puss was given a large dish of pilchards by the nurses which she devoured with relish.  They said she was a star and didn’t make any fuss at all.  That same evening they operated on the young cat who made a full recovery, with thanks to Puss Puss and the wonderful vet and nursing staff.

Puss Puss came home and ate a pouch of her favourite food, plus biscuits!  She had lots of fuss and the whole episode has been forgotten …. until the next time!

Just recently Puss Puss was going to give blood for a second time to a four week old kitten that was suffering from severe anaemia because of flea infestation.  The rest of the litter had died but this little kitten seemed stronger and there was hope that she would survive.  Unfortunately the night before the planned procedure the kitten died.

Puss Puss is a true wonder cat.  Obviously her destiny was to help other cats and we are sure she will be making more trips to the vets in the future to give blood to save more lives.  It seems that her fate was to belong to a CP Welfare Officer, so that she could continue being the super heroine that she is!
