When you become an owner of a cat, we cannot stress enough that it is very important to do two things:
- Get the cat micro-chipped at the vets. Make sure you REGISTER your information with the company that supplied the chip and with your vet, and that you get confirmation of the registration. Don't forget to keep your information up to date if you move - if your cat is found, even miles away, they can be reunited with you but ONLY if they have the correct information.
- Have the cat neutered. This will stop the cat wandering or fighting with other cats.
Before you contact anyone about a Lost or Found cat, please make sure you have the following details:
Name of cat? Age of cat? Sex of cat:Is it neutered? Colour of cat? Is it short or long-haired? Is it a specific breed like a Siamese or Persian? Any distinguishing marks? (white nose, white paws etc) Is the cat micro-chipped; do you have a note of the number? Did they have a collar or some ID? When and where was the cat last seen or FOUND? Do you have a good photo of the cat? (you can send us a digital picture of lost or found cats) What are your details and contact numbers?

Advice if your cat goes missing:
- Look around the neighbourhood for your cat; cats usually return within 24 hours if they have been without food.
- If you have recently moved house, has your cat gone back to it's old home? Cats have been known to travel several miles back to their old homes.
- Check that they haven't been shut in a neighbours shed, garage, greenhouse or a nearby empty building. The best way is to make up small leaflets with a description and if possible a picture of your cat to distribute around your neighbourhood. Ask the neighbours to look too.
- Send leaflets to local Vets in case your cat is found or has been injured.
- Have you, or a neighbour, had workmen at a property? Cats often climb into unattended vehicles and jump out the next time they stop. Contact the company to find out where to start looking.
- Put an advertisement in the Lost column of the local paper.
- Contact the local Animal Warden for St Albans District Council. They may have details if your cat has been fatally injured on the road. (Council's switchboard number is 01727 866100

If you have found a cat:
- Please email us at stalbanscp@hotmail.co.uk
- If you are unsure if the cat is lost or a stray, please contact us or a local vet to get a paper collar to write a message to the owner.
- Make sure, if it's female, that is does not have kittens in the area.
- Ask around if anyone knows it if has an owner.
- Put up posters in the area.
- Phone local vets with details.
- Keep the cat safe and continue to feed it until you find the owner.
