Manifesto for Cats launched at Wales' National Assembly

Wales’ first ever ‘Manifesto for Cats’ was launched on 23 February at the National Assembly for Wales, putting cat welfare firmly on the political agenda ahead of the election in May this year.
Cats Protection unveiled the 10-point document at a reception held at the Pierhead building in Cardiff Bay, hosted by Suzy Davies AM, Regional Assembly Member for South West Wales, and supported by Petplan.
29% of Welsh households own at least one cat, with an estimated cat population of approximately 670,000*. There is hope that cat-lovers will get behind the manifesto to call on key political figures to protect cats with policies on everything from the regulation of air guns to the inclusion of animal welfare in the welsh curriculum.
Advocacy Manager Jacqui Cuff stated: "As a political issue, animal welfare matters. A YouGov poll asked voters to name issues that will determine how they cast their vote. 18 per cent of those surveyed named animal welfare as such an issue."
She added: "As we approach the 2016 Welsh Assembly election, we are calling on existing and prospective AMs to get behind our Welsh Manifesto for Cats to ensure one of the nation’s best loved pets is fully protected by policies and the law."
