Fireworks - Not So Pawsome For Cats

26 October 2021

Keep your cat safe this Halloween

It is almost Halloween and ABC Council will see the return of their fireworks display at Craigavon Lakes this Thursday, 28th October 2021.

Whilst many of us enjoy such glittering displays and the excitement mixed with anticipation for the next bolt to light-up these dark October evenings... cats like many animals, companion or other, simply don’t.

Fireworks are frightening for cats and cause a great deal of unnecessary stress. This Halloween, some simple measures early evening could help manage/ reduce any potential stress:

  • Keep cats indoors in the evenings with curtains drawn;

  • Stay at home with your cat if you can;

  • Provide your cat with a litter tray so that they can stay in doors;

  • Consider creating a Cat Fort or safe place to hide if they want to be alone: How to make a cosy cat tent – Feline Crafty episode one

  • Why not consider use of a diffuser/ plug which can help reduce stress levels in cats. FELIWAY® Offer a range of such diffusers and each purchase helps to increase a donation donated by CEVA to Cats Protection.

  • Keep windows and doors closed.

  • Ensure your cat’s micro-chip details are up-to-date.

Have a look at Cat’s Protection’s video on fireworks and keeping cats calm. From all the volunteers at the Armagh Branch have a hauntingly good Halloween and stay safe!
