Dave's Bristol 10K 2013

05 June 2013
Bristol 10K – Sunday 5th May 2013
Hi. Let me introduce myself. I am Dave and born & bred in Bristol.
A job I had at the time some 8 years ago took me to Bridgend in South Wales.
Tiffany my first cat became very ill whilst we were living in Bridgend and I had to make the hardest decision I have ever had to make. I’ll say no more about this but I think you know what I mean.
Britney my younger cat was off her food for a couple of weeks afterwards and missing her friend. About a year later I decided that the time had come to get another cat.  I remember reading in a local paper that Cats Protection had a rehoming centre in Bridgend, not far from where I lived. I contacted them and went along looking for another cat.
Initially I wanted a female cat around 3-4 years of age and it had to be black & white like the Felix cat on TV. Bridgend rehoming centre has around 280 cats & kittens looking for a home at any one time. I spent ages looking around and some of the accounts of how they came to be with Cats Protection were heart-breaking. I admit I was in tears.
Unfortunately for me I didn’t find a cat to my specification. I then visited the kitten section and got to the last pen. The staff member who had been showing me around said that there were 3 black & white kittens in the last pen. When the door of the pen was opened a small bundle of black & white fur jumped out and sat on my shoulder. I instantly fell in love with this kitten that was named Uggs as it looked like she was wearing Ugg boots.
I collected Uggs a week later on my 43rd birthday. Uggs shortly became renamed as Pippy after Pippy Longstocking.
Initially Britney didn't take to her but they are now best of friends.
2011 saw me move back to Bristol. When I eventually got my current house after selling my house in Bridgend I found that I had some spare time on my hands. I made enquiries with Cats Protection as I wanted to help out in some way.
I settled on becoming a fosterer and have been doing it for about 7 months now. I have a large cattery built and paid for by Cats Protection and love my role. My first foster cats were a mum and 2 kittens. I had them for a couple of months. Eventually mum and one of the kittens got rehomed. The other kitten was Shadow has now been adopted by me. Shadow has been renamed Jess and I am now a 3 cat household.
Pippy & Jess are both black & white and always up to some sort of mischief. They have been nicknamed Miss Chief and May Hem.
I took up running on 1st January 2013 as my New Year’s resolution. I’m not very fast and prefer distance over speed.
When I initially heard of the Bristol 10K I wanted to take part and raise funds for Cats Protection, Bristol & District branch.
I was a little apprehensive as I've not run anything like this before. I needn't have worried as come the day of the race there were plenty of other novices.
Luckily on the day of the Bristol 10K, Sunday 5th May 2013, the weather was glorious. I admit I didn't run it all. I guess I ran about half and walked about half. I did complete it though in 1 hour, 24 minutes and 3 seconds.

Would I do it again? Definitely. I'm even thinking of taking part in either the Bristol or Weston-super-Mare half marathon later this year.

Dave has raised £153.50, but would like to make it to £250.  He can still be sponsored through http://www.justgiving.com/Dave-Wyatt1.
