Happy 50th Anniversary

29 April 2018

This year Derby and District Branch reaches its Golden Anniversary.  The Branch was formed in 1968 and held its inaugural meeting on 29th April of that year. The aims and objectives of the Branch then and now is to help cats and kittens in need by providing food, shelter and veterinary care, to operate an active neutering and spaying policy, to offer help and advice to cat owners where possible.

For many years, the Derby charity shop was based at the old Derby Bus Station and when this was planned for demolition, we had to seek an alternative.  So this is a shot of the opening of our second shop in the Strand Arcade, showing our then Chairman, Aubrey Brazier and John Twells, doing the honours. Our third shop is now based at the Wardwick and, with the Wirksworth shop, this is how we raise our funds.

Before our Headquarters took over the running of our Adoption Centre, now at Dalbury Lees, the Branch ran what was then called the Spondon Schelter.  The photo shows the opening of one of our Summer Fairs there in the late 1980s by Greg Knight MP – photo shows from left Greg, his then fiancee, Carole Millward, the Shelter Manager and volunteer Sylvia Plummer

We also used to hold an annual Victorian Christmas Fair and a Summer Fair but lack ofvolunteers brought these two very popular events to a halt.  One of the attractions was our Tom and Kitty Show, written by Sylvia, one of our volunteers, and performed by volunteers Jill and daughter Adele.  The kids absolutely loved it – oh, yes they did!!

The Branch intends to continue to expand and maintain its status as a caring and concerned charity with an excellent record of achievement.
