Comments by the Sunday Sport causes the fur to fly at Cats Protection
24 July 2017
Following yesterday’s (Sunday 23 July) article in the Sunday Sport criticising the BBC for paying £45,000 a year to a cat called Esther, we would like to respond by saying a cat like Esther is well worth her money.
The Sport reported that she was spotted fast asleep during some of its big-name shows like Graham Norton but Cats Protection believes she is vital in helping to calm stressed BBC staff and visitors.
According to research we did with the Mental Health Foundation, nine in 10 people say a cat has a positive impact on their wellbeing, helping them to feel calmer and more relaxed.
And cats are great stress-busters – many owners said they’d rather snuggle up to a cat rather than have a massage (66 per cent), phone a friend (64 per cent) or have a drink (52 per cent).
Esther’s rodent-catching skills have probably saved the BBC a fortune in chemical pest control too.
The real scandal here is not Esther’s pay. It’s the fact that thousands of deserving cats like her are still on the shelf waiting for homes. If you’d like to adopt one, please visit our adoption page
Keep up the good work Esther. And whether a cat is male or female, we believe they should all be paid the same!
