Volunteering with Gateshead Cats Protection

Our branch is run entirely by volunteers - people like you

Without our team of reliable and committed volunteers, we would not be able to home cats and kittens who through no fault of their own find themselves alone and uncared for.

Why volunteer for Cats Protection?

Cats Protection is the UK's leading feline welfare charity. Our vision is a world where every cat is treated with kindness and an understanding of its needs.
Cats Protection has some simple and clear objectives to help cats:

Homing-finding good homes for cats and kittens
Neutering- supporting the neutering of cats to prevent unwanted and abandoned litters
improving people's understanding of cats and their care

Foster Carer?

We aim to find a happy home for every cat. We also reunite lost cats with their owners.  Could you offer a temporary home to a rescue cat whilst we find them a new home?  By volunteering you will make a huge difference to the present and future welfare of vulnerable cats and kittens.

We are inundated with calls every day and cannot help all of the stray cats and owners who are facing difficulties. The more fosterers we have, the more cats and kittens we are able to help and eventually rehome to loving families.

Our foster cats are all in the homes of our volunteers, or in specially designed pens in their gardens.  To foster for us you will need to be happy to welcome a rescue cat into your home.  If you have other pets, you will need to have a spare room, as our rescue cats need to be kept separate from your own pets (this is to reduce the stress for both your own pets and the rescue cat, and to control infections). We provide food, pay all vet bills and reimburse expenses for litter and other items. Fostering suits those with at least some experience of cats.

Are you living in the area on a temporary basis for a time? We've had fosterers who plan to move in the next year or two for careers for instance and haven't wanted to take on their own cat. Fostering has been ideal for them to have a cat in their home as well as helping it towards adoption and a forever home.

Rehoming Team Volunteer?
Could you help our rehoming team? Our rehoming team work hard to find every rescue cat in our care a safe, loving home. We learn about the cats in our care, decide what sort of home will be right for them and then promote them to the public. We answer queries about our cats and strive to place the right cat into the right home, so both the new family and the rescue cat find their perfect match. Finally, we check to see that our cats have settled in well- it's so rewarding to hear stories of happy cats in their new homes!

Fundraising is extremely important.  We receive no government or lottery funding and have very high vet bills!  We have lots of good fundraising ideas but we need someone to help put our ideas into practice. Importantly, fundraising is not just about shaking a tin! Could you help organise and coordinate events to sell our Cats Protection merchandise? How about promoting our cats for sponsorship, or the weekly lottery? Think you could organise a scrumptious Pawsome Tea? Or help to manage some online fundraising? There's so many exciting ways you can help to raise essential funds for cats in need.

Our cats often need to travel around – rescue cats need lots of vet visits before they travel to their lovely new home.  We also deliver tonnes of food and litter to our fosterers.  Could you help by being a driver for us?

If you have some time to spare, and think that you can help, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact Jane at coordinator@gateshead.cats.org.uk
