Owner of property letting agency Homes4Harrogate, Sarah Johnston, has had her own personal experiences of the problems of trying to rent a property when you have pets resulting in her decision to branch out and launch Lets4Pets to specifically overcome this problem whilst raising money for Harrogate Cats Protection Branch.
According to Sarah ‘There are a vast number of tenants who struggle to find rental accommodation as the majority of landlords won't allow pets in their properties. Greater understanding is needed that pets are part of the family and Harrogate & District Cats Protection, who we are supporting, have confirmed that animals can help to alleviate loneliness and mental health issues like depression.’ Being a tenant herself and experiencing these problems first hand has made her take direct action both to raise awareness of the problem and to set out to help reassure landlords to allow tenants to keep their animal companions with them in their new home.
For each Lets4Pets property that Homes4harrogate does let to a tenant with a pet, they will donate £5 to the Harrogate Branch of Cats Protection and will present the branch with a cheque at the end of the year. There will also be ‘donate now’ links on the Homes4harrogate website and tenants home move in boxes will have items from Cats Protection in them.
It costs on average £150 per cat for vaccinations, neutering and microchips plus extra costs for food, litter and accommodation. This is not covered by the adoption fee of £35 plus suggested donation so they are dependent on donations from fundraising and legacies.
Sarah is hoping that by raising awareness about the problems of letting homes to people with pets and linking up with the charity that both can benefit.
