National Cat Awards
Several cat-loving celebrities showed their support for us at our prestigious National Cat Awards 2014 which took place at The Savoy in London.
The awards are designed to celebrate the real-life stories of companionship, bravery and survival in the cat world. This year’s event was hosted by hosted by presenter Maggie Philbin and the celebrity judges were Downton Abbey
star Paul Copley, Emmerdale
actressEden Taylor-Draper, West End and former Hollyoaks
actress Carley Stenson and Republica
singer Saffron Sprackling.
With all the judges self-confessed “cat people”, they were handed the difficult task of choosing the winning cats from a shortlist of three nominees in the following categories - Hero Cat, Most Caring Cat, Most Incredible Story, and Outstanding Rescue Cat.
A panel of past celebrity judges, including model Lucy Pinder, actress Lesley Joseph, TV presenter Tim Vincent, ex-BBC newsreader Jan Leeming, actor Anthony Head and TV vet Emma Milne, then selected the overall winner from the category winners.
In the end Nelson, a twenty-two-year-old ex-stray who had survived against the odds to become a much-loved family pet, was crowned National Cat of the Year after first winning the Most Incredible Story category, chosen by Paul Copley. Paul commented: “To survive all that he has and still be able to trust humans is quite something!”
Other celebrities to have judged the awards in the past include former Yes keyboardist and star of Grumpy Old Men Rick Wakeman, comedians Ed Byrne and Iain Lee, actress and presenter Sarah-Jane Honeywell, Olympic athlete Sally Gunnel OBE, actress Prunella Scales and actor Brian Blessed.
