Animal Welfare Bill passes through Parliament

28 April 2021

Our Publicity Manager, Diana, has for many years actively encouraged fellow cat lovers to sign petitions to improve animal welfare. Now, after four years of campaigning by several animal charities, countless hours of work and over 75,000 emails from supporters to MPs, the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill has just completed its passage through Parliament.

This historic moment means that the maximum sentence for animal cruelty offences will increase from six months to five years. Diana and all at Cats Protection now encourage you to sign the petition to enforce the microchipping of cats. Together, we have changed the law and we can do it again!

The Animal Welfare Act 2021, as it will be known when it has been signed by the Queen, will make a difference to the lives of animals for years to come. To show you what this means to us all, and how we got here, watch our short film below.
