Simon's Cat Logic - why do cats hunt?

15 January 2017
Simon

Why does your cat go hunting, even when it isn’t hungry? In the latest Simon’s Cat Logic video, creator Simon Tofield and Cats Protection’s Behaviour Manager Nicky Trevorrow have teamed up to answer this age-old question.

So what makes a cat so good at hunting? Nicky explains. “Cats are perfectly adapted to hunting” says Nicky. “They have excellent eyesight so they can see in low light levels, they have really good hearing for hearing tiny little squeaks of their prey species and they’re very fast and agile and have excellent sense of balance.”

As for cats hunting when they’re not hungry, it’s important to remember that the hunting drive is separate to the hunger drive – cats will continue to hunt when they’ve been fed. Although you can’t stop your moggy from venturing outside, interactive play with a toy like a fishing rod will simulate hunting behaviour and release endorphins.
