What we do

Our vision is a world where every cat is treated with kindness and an understanding of its needs. 
 
At Cats Protection, we have been helping injured, starving and abandoned cats and kittens since 1927. 
Thanks to our promise never to put a healthy cat to sleep, we have changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of cats, giving them a second chance at life.
 
The North Birmingham branch is run entirely by volunteers. We are completely self-funded and rely on the continuing generosity of our supporters to carry out a variety of activities in pursuit of our three key objectives: 
 
North Birmingham Cats Protection is part of a national charity that helps over 235,000 cats and kittens each year.  The North Birmingham branch is run by a network of volunteers, doing all we can to achieve our three core aims: Education, Neutering, and Homing.
 
- Our welfare officers do the hands on business of trapping, neutering (with the help of a vet!) and returning feral cats to prevent more unwanted kittens. 
- Our fosterers, some with purpose-built cat cabins, take in abandoned or neglected cats, who they feed, socialise and care for until our homing team can find them their forever homes.
- Our Fundraising and Events team find all sorts of ways to fund these activities. The cost of running the branch is huge - including a considerable annual bill for veterinary treatments, including blood tests, vaccinations and neutering - and despite our many fundraising efforts our finances are coming up short. 
 
In 2011 we rehomed 356 cats, but in the current economic climate our job is getting tougher and this fell to just 156 in 2013. We have more helpline calls from people looking to get rid of their cat than from people adopting. That’s why neutering cats is now more important than ever.

The number to ring to report a stray or feral cat colony is our general helpline - 0345 260 1503. Please note all vets will scan a cat free of charge to detect a Microchip and try to trace a cat's owner!
