Celebrating 10 Years of Black Cat Day! Black Cat Day

Black Cat Day, held on 27 October, is the UK version of ‘Black Cat Appreciation Day’ (held in the US on 17 August) and was created by Cats Protection as a response to the insight that black cats took longer to rehome than other cats in our care. Over the years we’ve explored reasons why that might be and tried to change adopter perceptions and the rehoming trend.

The good news? It’s worked!

On average black cats now spend ten days less in our care before being rehomed than they did ten years ago. The gap between the length of time black cats and other cats stay in our care has also narrowed.

And that's not all.

44% of cats homed through Cats Protection centres in the last 10 years have been black or black and white cats.

Over the last 10 years our centres have homed over 65,000 black and black and white cats.

On average, in 2019, black/black and white cats took only 2 more days to home vs other cats (the gap was 4 days five years ago).

All of this shows how successful our campaign has been, and how much better of a reputation black cats have now than in 2010!

Want to get involved this year?

This year, we are encouraging our supporters to host their own Black Cat Quiz (virtually!) to fundraise to help cats in need. Raise money and awareness by hosting a fun contest with family and friends. More info can be found here: https://www.cats.org.uk/support-us/events/blackcatquiz

Fancy grabbing yourself some black cat merch and gifts? Head to our online gift shop here: https://www.catsprotectionshop.co.uk/acatalog/Black-Cat-Day-p1.html

At Cats Protection we will be using our #BlackCatDay hashtag across social media platforms on 27 October and in the upcoming weeks. Why not share photos of your adorable black or black and white cats with the hashtag?
