A second chance for stray cat Oscar
17 June 2022
Oscar arrived at the branch in an awfully bad way with a loud rattling noise coming from his nasal passage. Mucus was streaming from his nose meaning he could only breathe through his mouth, which is extremely hard for a cat to do.Oscar was seen by our vet for investigation and prescribed antibiotics. Unfortunately, he did not show any improvement and after even more tests, including x-rays, his condition was still undiagnosed.Mucus continued to pour from Oscar's nose until one Sunday evening he became incredibly distressed and started banging his head on the pen door resulting in a cut nose. Fearing the worst, we rushed him to the emergency vet hospital to see if anything else could be done. The vet decided to do a sinus flush under anaesthetic. This dislodged a large polyp at the top of his nasal passage, which the vet was then able to cut out through Oscar’s nose. At last, the cause of the rattle had been discovered. Fortunately, pathology tests revealed that the polyp was not a cancerous growth. For several days, Oscar remained in the critical care area receiving 24-hour nurse checks to make sure he was breathing and eating properly before being discharged. It was touch and go for a while, but Oscar made an excellent recovery. We are amazed that Oscar was able to survive with such a large tumour, especially as we do not know how long Oscar had lived outside as a stray before coming into our care.We are so happy we have been able to turn Oscar’s life around after what has been a difficult time for him. Oscar still has a very faint rattling sound, but he can now breathe so much easier.Oscar has now been homed to a very loving family and within two hours of arrival, he had made himself well and truly at home. We knew he would make a very affectionate pet as he loved being cuddled and stroked by our fosterer. Below are some pictures of him settling in.
