Kittens rescued from drain pipe seeking new homes

Three stray kittens were recently plucked to safety by Cats Protection volunteers after finding themselves trapped in a drainpipe.

The kittens, now named Joseph, Noah and Magdalena, were just three weeks old when they were found in the four-inch wide rainwater pipe with their three siblings and feral mother found close by. They were rescued by Alison Gambles, Welfare and Homing Officer at the Cats Protection Hornchurch branch, after receiving a call from a local resident.

Alison said: "I went to have a look and found three of the kittens with their mother hiding under the flowerbeds. There was still the sound of meowing and after a lot of rummaging around; we found three more inside the drainpipe."

As the kittens had just reached the age where they could crawl, it is expected that they were born into the surrounding shrubbery and had fallen into the drain. The kittens were soon retrieved by the volunteers while their mother, a feral stray, was found nearby. She has since been named Amy by volunteers and has been neutered and rehomed at an outdoor home in Essex.

While three of the kittens were rehomed in Essex, the three remaining kittens were transferred to Cats Protection’s National Cat Adoption Centre in Sussex for rehoming.

Karen Thompson, Deputy Manager of the National Cat Adoption Centre said: "Fortunately, these kittens were found while still young enough to be socialised and are now lovely, fun-loving and friendly kittens who will all make wonderful pets."
