Is your cat properly registered?
Is your cat properly registered?

At the start of a new year just a reminder about microchipping. This will soon become a legal requirement for all cats over 5 months old. However, even if your cat IS microchipped, there can still be problems. A vet may chip the cat but not actually register it.

Recently the owner of a cat which was chipped and tragically involved in an RTA was only reunited because a volunteer saw a post on Next Door. The vet who had the cat in their care was unable to trace the owner. This is not an isolated incident.
The microchip is only as good as the information linked to it. Unfortunately not all microchips are registered correctly.
• Not every owner has details of the microchip to hand.
• Not everybody remembers to update details when they move or change their telephone number/s
• Occasionally microchips move

Please take a moment to check your cat is registered correctly. It may also be a good idea to get your pet scanned at their yearly check up.

This site is a good starting point.

The owner of the pictured cat didn’t originally get microchip details from the large independent rescue he was adopted from so chased them up and discovered the chip had not been registered due to an oversight. If you have recently adopted a rescue cat and have not been contacted by the microchip company within a few weeks it would be a good idea to follow up with the rescue you adopted from.
