Adoption Procedure

ADOPT WITH CONFIDENCE

Our friendly team at the Haslemere Adoption Centre will help you choose a cat that is best suited to you, your lifestyle and your home. When you give a home to a cat or kitten from us, you can be assured that it has been vet-checked, neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and treated for fleas and worms.

If you’re ready to adopt, the process is easy and straightforward:-

ENQUIRE/APPLY

If you are ready to adopt a cat within the next seven days and are interested in one of our cats on the Adopt a Cat page, please click on the ‘Contact us about this cat’ button on the bottom of that cat's profile. You can also email us at haslemere@cats.org.uk. We do have a range of cats in our care with differing needs and personalities, so if you're unsure or would like to find out more about adopting a cat in general, please do give us a call on 01428 604297; our team will be happy to tell you all about the cats, so we can match the right cat to you and your home.

Once we’ve received your enquiry about a cat, we will check out your address on Google Maps to see the area and to consider the location as a potential match. If we are unable to find your home/location then we may ask for photos or request to carry out a home visit.

If we think you’re a match to the cat you're interested in, we’ll give you a call or email you to discuss the cat. At this stage we will ask for proof of your address and landlord consent (if applicable). This could be one of the following:

  • Credit card statement
  • Council tax bill or utility bill
  • Driving licence

If you’re in rented accommodation, you will need a letter of consent by your landlord. Please request for a letter before you apply for a cat as it will speed up the homing process.

RESERVE
Once all the above has been received, and we feel you and the cat are a good match then we can reserve the cat for you and we’ll arrange for an adoption appointment call where you’ll be provided with full information about the cat. Please note however that because we want each cat to be in their new home as soon as possible, we can only reserve a cat for seven days.  So please only apply for a specific cat if you are ready to adopt him or her within seven days. If you have plans such as moving house, a holiday or home improvements, please just apply for a cat when you're ready to adopt.

ADOPT
You will be invited to meet your moggy match by appointment in person prior to adoption.  Adoption paperwork can be completed at the centre on the day of collection or sent via email for you to review and sign and return. We will be able to finalise the adoption once this paperwork is received and the adoption fee has been paid. The paperwork consists of a Medical Summary, Adoption Form, and PetPlan Terms for your free one-month of insurance cover. During your adoption appointment we will talk you through this paperwork and discuss settling your new friend into their home.

Arrangements will be made for you to pay the adoption fee by card payment over the phone or in person. We would prefer card payments where possible. Once this is complete, we’ll arrange for an adoption day when you can collect your adopted friend to take home.

If you need any guidance on how to prepare your home ready for adoption, do check out our 'Preparing for a Cat' guide. Or please do ask us. We also can help you kit out your home in advance with everything you need, with our quality Cat Care range.

POST-ADOPTION SUPPORT
With cats needing extra support during the settling in period, we will arrange times to catch up with you to see how your cat is getting on in their new home and provide any advice you may need. This starts from the day the cat is delivered and we will check in with you approximately 21 days from their arrival. At the end of the 21 days we will no longer contact you for updates, but our help doesn’t end there. We’re only ever a phone call away, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch for any advice you might need!
