Adopt a cat

We've been using a hands-free (minimal contact) homing approach during the Covid-19 pandemic. Now that government restrictions have been lifted we're taking a hybrid approach, which means there will be a mix of face-to-face and virtual contact, determined by both adopter and volunteer circumstances and preferences. We can't guarantee that you'll be able to meet your chosen cat 'in person', but we'll still be ensuring that all our cats are matched with homes that provide the environment and lifestyle they require. You'll find descriptions, photos and (where available) video clips of the cats in their profiles to help you decide which one might be for you.

If you like the look of one of our cats send us an enquiry via
the contact form on the cat's profile page or give us a call on 0345 371 2739, mailbox option 2. If we think you're a match we'll call to take a few more details. We'll then arrange a home visit, which is likely to be via WhatsApp or FaceTime but might be carried out in person. At the home visit we go through important information about settling in and caring for a cat. Something to consider beforehand is that it's important for at least 24 hours for your cat to be in what we call a “safe room”, because it can be overwhelming to introduce them to the entire home on Day 1. The safe room could be a bedroom, dining room or conservatory, as long as that room can be shut off from the rest of your home. We don't recommend kitchens or living rooms as they can be quite busy. During the home visit you'll be able to show us the safe room and also your cat flap (or where it will go) and garden. Once the home visit has been done you'll discuss suitable cats with our homing coordinator. You'll then either come to meet the cat or will talk with the fosterer and hear about its behaviour, and food and litter preferences, and they can answer any questions you might have. If all is well we'll reserve the cat for you and proceed to adoption.

Once your cat has been reserved we send the adoption paperwork via email for you to review and sign. The adoption is finalised once this paperwork has been returned and the adoption fee received. The paperwork consists of an adoption form and PetPlan Terms & Conditions for your cat's free one-month insurance cover. Details will be given for payment of the adoption fee online. The fosterer will then contact you re collecting your cat. If you have opted to buy the new cat carrier it will be brand new and of excellent quality. If you're supplying your own carrier please make sure it's large enough for your new cat, and that it's safe and secure. Wicker cat carriers are not recommended.

After the adoption we follow up to see how your cat is settling in and we'll check in with you at 3, 7 and 28 days from arrival. However, we're only a phone call or email away, so you can always get in touch for advice or help.

Please scroll down to see the cats we have in care -  there are sometimes more cats behind the scenes who haven't made it to the website yet. If you don't see the cat for you do ask as we may have a new arrival who fits the bill perfectly! If you spot a cat you're interested in please mention their name when giving us a call on 0345 371 2739 option 2,
or by emailing us at homing@eastsurrey.cats.org.uk
