Alternative Homing

Alternative Homing

Sadly, the demand for space in our pens is such that Cats Protection cannot take in all of the cats which need our help. Cats Protection’s Alternative Homing Scheme (“the Scheme”) is designed to provide a quick and easy way of helping cats that need homes to find a home if we cannot take them into our care.

Under the Scheme, Cats Protection’s involvement in the rehoming process is limited to obtaining information from the owner and passing it to people we know may be looking to provide homes for cats. The Scheme is designed to provide a quick and easy way of helping cats that need homes to find new homes if we cannot take them into our care.

These are three alternative methods of homing where cats do not come into Cats Protection (CP) care. This generally happens when owners want to give their cat to new owners with minimal help from Cats Protection.

Method

Description

Is there any paperwork or expenses?

Method 1 - ‘Introduction only’ method

CP put owners who want to rehome their cats in touch with people who want to adopt cats.

The details of the cat are posted on a CP website, and people who are interested can contact CP for the owners’ details (name and phone number only).

  • Cats do not come into the charity’s care, so no CP paperwork
  • No adoption fee
  • Any vet checks will be the cost of the owner, not the charity

Method 2 - 'Helping hands’ method

CP may carry out home assessments to current and new home, vet checks, and advertise cats on websites.

  • Cats do not come into the charity’s care, so no CP paperwork
  • No adoption fee
  • Any vet checks will be the cost of the owner, not the charity

Method 3 - 'Alternative adoption’ method

Ownership passes to CP, but possession does not. There may be vet checks and home assessments.

  • As these cats are considered CP cats, Acceptance and adoption forms must be completed as per normal CP protocol.
  • An adoption fee of £75

Top level guidelines

Suitability of the cat

The cats outlined below should not be included or put forward for any of the alternative homing methods. This is because there are increased risks of disease, behavioural and/or welfare complications with these groups.

Disclaimers

*It should be made clear that CP cannot assure 100% suitability of the new owner and nor can we offer any assurances to the new owner that the cat is fit, healthy, free from disease.

Because Cats Protection does not at any time own the cats rehomed through alternative homing and the arrangements to transfer ownership are agreed between the existing and new owner, Cats Protection cannot become involved in any disputes which may arise.

*After rehoming, CP also cannot facilitate or mediate in disagreements between the parties before or after the transfer of ownership or reclaim the cat back. If the cat requires a new home, we advise the cat to go into CP care under normal processes.
