Adorable Amber is taking the 'direct' route to a new home ...

Adorable Amber is taking the

Hundreds of cat-lovers click on the ‘Adopt a Cat’ tab on this website every week to see what cats the Branch are promoting for adoption. Sometimes there are lots, sometimes very few. Often when cats and kittens seems to be few on the ground (believe the volunteers, they never are!) it is because the Branch has limited resources and no ‘sanctuary’ – just willing fosterers who take cats into their own homes. And those are always the most vulnerable, needy and sick felines for whom there is just no other option.

But how many website viewers notice the tab just underneath - ‘to see more cats click here’? Because here the public can often see dozens more cats who need a new home just as much, maybe even more so, than the limited number of cats the Branch can ‘take in’.

The ‘direct rehoming scheme’ has been run by volunteer Sheila Pennell for a good while, but just now she is developing the service – and how better to promote it than with this gorgeous silver-tabby girl – Amber – who is looking for a new home?

Says Sheila: “Instead of popping her straight on the directs page, I thought she deserved to be seen by everyone! And there are often genuine reasons why people might need or want to part with a much-loved pet. When folk move house reasons include death, debt or divorce – and it can be very similar with wanting to rehome a cat. In this instance, Amber's owner is moving out of the family home and leaving Amber behind with his younger sister, Humira, who finds it a big responsibility.

“Humira  tells us that she can provide Amber's vaccination details, confirm that she is spayed and that she is friendly, well-behaved and gets on well with other cats and children. Also she’d come to the family 3 years ago as a stray, and Humira thinks she is now about 4 or 5 years old. She says 'Amber likes being outdoors when the weather is good, but she doesn't like dry food or getting wet!'

So that sounds like a vote for tasty wet food and a nice dry place to sleep indoors! Not a daft cat at all!

** Stop press: Amber was adopted in December, 2015, and Humira decided to keep Maxwell, after getting him neutered with the help of Cats Protectio.

Anyone looking to adopt, especially an older cat, might like to consider checking out the directs page to see if any particular puss appeals. These cats usually come with their toys, bedding and a carrier, a record of what health checks they’ve had, detailed information of their likes and dislikes from the owner, and they are always free to a good home.

All the details of how the scheme works can be found on the introduction to that page – and the Branch is happy to accept a donation from both or either parties involved if they are feeling very happy with their new pet and very generous!
