Cat volunteers make new friends in Dudley ...

Woodside friendship group in Dudley enjoyed a Cats Protection presentation on a sunny Saturday afternoon in February – as well as their lunch and afternoon cake and tea.

North Birmingham branch volunteers Sheila Pennell and Pam Wood were booked by club organiser Katie Coates, and were delighted to go along and discuss ‘all things cat’ with the lively and chatty group of around 25 ladies and one gentleman – Norman.

Says Sheila: “More than half our audience already had a cat. One lovely lady Joan was 94 and proudly showed us photos of her cat Amber on her mobile phone. And we needn’t worry about the future for either Joan or her pet, as her son Steve came to pick her up and said ‘I’ll always look after Mom and the cat’. Music to our ears!”

Norman and Joan, along with other members of Woodside friendship group, enjoyed a Cats Protection presentation on Saturday, 17 February

Pam took on the one-hour motorway drive to the venue, and kicked the presentation off with a ‘how much do you know about cats quiz’. “And,” says Pam, “It was quite a lot! And the group told us about when the Oak Steel works closed down, and how a cat charity – probably Cats Protection – had helped the workers find homes for around 200 cats that had kept the rats down, and how the men had always fed them on a rota basis. Everyone said they enjoyed our visit, loved the bookmarks, car-stickers and various leaflets, and kindly gave us a donation too.”

Next ‘presentation stop' for Pam and Sheila is the Walmley Brownies in March, so from one end of the age spectrum to the other!
