Chance chat about Cairo seals library deal ...

A Cats Protection display in Erdington Library attracted so much attention, volunteers were asked if they could set up something similar at Shard End – and didn’t need to be asked twice!

Pat Pedder, Assistant Manager at Erdington and a long-time Branch supporter, confirmed her appreciation – as well as that of library users - of the current display and literature, while Saleem Ayub, Manager over Erdington and Hodge Hill Libraries (and owner of gorgeous kitten Cairo) decided he’d like to spread the cat care and neutering message further afield.

So just before Christmas, volunteers Jane Holt and Sheila Pennell drove over to Shard End library and display number two was set up. Prominently and in the foyer too!

A chance chat about cute kitten Cairo (pictured) 'sealed the deal' on the Branch being invited to set up cat information displays in Erdington Library (right) and Shard End too, where regular library visitors Gary and Phil picked up some useful leaflets on the importance of early neutering!

Says branch volunteer Sheila: “Staff at both libraries have been so helpful and, with major new neutering campaigns ahead in February and March, it’s great to get the message out there. Library manager Saleem has asked if we can give a talk on the work of Cats Protection early in the New Year, and we’ve set up ‘story and craft afternoons’ in the community room at Erdington library before and hope to do more in 2016.”

Saleem contacted Sheila for advice about his own kitten, Cairo, and during their cat-chat she discovered he was a library manager, and he asked if CP would like to set up a display in his Shard End library. Sheila’s answer was a speedy ‘yes’ and the literature and posters needed were ordered.

“Cat-lovers need to know what support is available,” says Saleem, “in respect of neutering – why it is so important – and the welfare of the animals. It is great to have this informative display at Shard End library and we’re looking forward to encouraging parents and children to come along for the talk.”

** Remember, anyone on a low income or benefits can apply for a 2016 neutering voucher for their cat. Kittens should be neutered at around 4 months of age. A new Birmingham-wide neutering campaign is in the planning stage and will be promoted and publicised early in the New Year.
