Fred's Favourite: Golden Oldies

10 May 2014
Fred Hello Fred fans!

Well I'm back after a bit of a break from blogging.  I've been so busy meeting and greeting, patrolling, eating and sleeping I just haven't been able to put paw to computer keyboard and write to you all!

We have had a busy time with lots of kittens going home recently.  We see so many young whippersnappers being reserved left, right and centre but some of our adults are being sadly overlooked and this is just not good enough!  I feel I should speak up for them and do my best to get them noticed!

Owning an older cat is easy peasy lemon squeezy compared to those pesky kittens.  There's no climbing the curtains, crying for attention, mad half hours at 3am, stalking your toes or attacking the furniture.  Being 14 myself I know that older cats are content just to be warm, comfortable and fed.  We make great relaxation partners but don't get me wrong, we can be very entertaining too when we want to be!  I love to play with my feeding toys and ping pong balls when the mood takes me!

We have a lovely lot of golden oldies at the centre at the moment - Bobtail (as seen in the photo) and Gertie are both 10 years old and have been with us since February, far too long in my opinion!  They both have great characters and anyone would be lucky to adopt them.  They are real happy cats who love fuss and company, not bossy like me!  Even at 10 years of age they should not be thought of as old and past it (more middle aged!) as some cats live to 20+ years these days!  With the right care and love they could make it to that age too!

Holly (12 years), Jess (13 years) and Sasha (14 years) all came to us after their owners had died, poor loves.  They all have lovely personalities and deserve a loving home as much as any kitten or young cat.  Just because they don't want to run around all the time and wreak havoc doesn't mean they should be left here at the Centre in favour of a younger model... Jess loves to chase her ping pong ball around as much as anyone and Holly has been known to have her mad moments too.  Yes they do like to sleep a bit more than a younger cat but that could be a good thing if you work a lot - they will entertain themselves and are happy to nap if you're not around!  I would imagine that owning an older cat must be very satisfying.  Yes, they may not have too many years ahead of them but you could take pride in knowing you are making those years happy and fulfilled...

If you feel you would like to offer an older cat a forever home then take a look at our Adopt a Cat page to read all about them.  Or maybe you know an older, lonely person who would benefit from the companionship that one of our cats could offer.  Having that unconditional love could be very important to someone you know so get your thinking caps on!

That's all for now, hope to see you at the Centre soon!

Love and purrs,

Fred x
