Cats Protection uses social media to reach and engage with our supporters, donors, volunteers and cat owners across the UK.

The following moderation guidelines relate to Cats Protection social media channels, including, but not limited to: Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube and Twitch.

We want our social media channels to be a safe and accessible space for our audiences to share their love of cats, support for our work, fundraising successes and more. We also encourage users to engage with us via social media to ask questions about our services, latest news and campaigns.

All comments and messages on our social media accounts, both national and local, are moderated regularly, often with reduced support on weekends and Bank Holidays. We aim to respond to questions as efficiently as possible. Please bear in mind some of our channels are managed by volunteers outside of other roles or commitments.

Safety and inclusivity

In the interest of ensuring our channels are inclusive, welcoming and in line with our values, we reserve the right to hide or remove certain posts or comments.

Instances in which we would remove posts or comments include:

  • violent, obscene, offensive, profane or hateful posts, links or images
  • threatening, abusive or defaming language of an individual or organisation
  • content of a sexually explicit nature
  • discriminatory or demeaning comments or images, especially using race, religion or belief, sexual orientation, age, gender reassignment, sex, pregnancy and maternity, marriage and civil partnership, disability, or any other personal characteristic as a means of insult
  • swearing or obscenities
  • bullying, harassment or sexual harassment
  • posts suggesting or encouraging anything illegal, including but not limited to illegal acts, breach of copyright, defamation or contempt of court
  • content that breaches data protection, for example sensitive data or personal details about you or other people, including contact details
  • sharing information or content that could put vulnerable people at risk
  • comments or imagery that violates the privacy of our team members
  • details or images of any Cats Protection Lifeline cats
  • breach of any of the terms of any of the social media platforms themselves: X (Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube
  • advertisements or spam
  • inclusion of confidential correspondence with Cats Protection or other organisations

If a post breaks the rules listed above or could be distressing or upsetting to others, we are likely to hide and/or delete it.

In addition, where necessary, dependent on frequency, scale or content posted, we reserve the right to take action and ‘ban’ or ‘block’ users who persistently break these rules, repeatedly tag or contact Cats Protection in a hostile manner or attempt to impersonate an individual or organisation without their consent.

When we need to take action, we reserve the right to extend this across other Cats Protection social media channels,

Please note, we are unable to give veterinary advice about specific cats via social media. If you are worried about changes in your cats’ health or behaviour, please contact your vet as soon as possible.

If you have questions about rehoming, our services, fundraising or need further advice, you can call our national information line on 03000 12 12 12 or email info@cats.org.uk

Social media and AI

We are committed to using artificial intelligence (AI) in a responsible and ethical way that reflects our organisational values and prevents online misinformation.

  • Our data and statistics come from referenced, trusted sources
  • We will never share personal or sensitive data with AI systems as part of our social media planning, promotions or community management
  • We will never use generative AI to create or edit imagery of cats or content for our social media channels, unless explicitly referenced in relation to certain campaigns or AI-related topics
  • We will never use generative AI to dramatise imagery of cats, for example, make injuries appear more severe or graphic
  • Any use of AI for inspiration or development will be done so in a way that respects human rights and promotes social and environmental wellbeing, adhering to relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards
