Enriching the lives of cats with Purina

Is your cat displaying some difficult behaviours in the home or do you have an indoor cat who you’re worried gets bored sometimes?

With our long-standing partner Purina, we’re working together to raise awareness of the importance of enrichment, shining a light on what enrichment means and how it can help cats stay happy in their homes.

So, what is enrichment?

As owners we need to ensure all of our cats’ needs are met. This means not just providing essentials like food and water, but making sure we meet their mental and physical needs as well. This is where enrichment comes in! Find out more in our video:

Why is enrichment important?

With just over a third of us now having indoor cats, it is important to know that natural behaviours such as hunting cannot naturally be fulfilled in the home environment. Enrichment is vital to keeping our cats happy and healthy for lots of reasons:

  • preventing boredom – we all know a bored cat is not a happy cat! Making sure your cat has lots to keep them occupied means they are less likely to become bored
  • easing frustration – if your cat can’t express natural behaviours they may become unhappy and frustrated, causing them to act out in ways that we as owners don’t like
  • expressing natural behaviours – all cats want to hunt, it’s just a natural part of being a cat. Being able to do this through play at home will satisfy their need to hunt and get rid of any excess energy they have so they can go back to snoozing all day

How can I keep my cat happy at home?

There are lots of ways you can keep your cat happy at home! From playing with fishing rod toys to making puzzle feeders for them.

Whether you have an indoor or outdoor cat, take a look at some of our handy blogs in partnership with Purina about keeping your cat happy at home:

Advice from the experts at Cats Protection

To help keep happy cats in happy homes, our behaviour expert, Daniel, suggests the following:

“Daily enrichment, such as the use of a puzzle feeder or appropriate play, can have many benefits for all cats, but especially indoor-only cats and cats in multi-cat households. These activities simultaneously help stimulate the cat both physically and mentally, while also contributing to the release of ‘feel good’ hormones.

Providing activities that best meet the natural behaviours of our domestic cats ensures that one of their key welfare needs are met. This can form part of a wider solution needed for all cats and to strive for harmony in a multi-cat household too.

Additionally, the value of vertical space should not be underestimated. Cats being able to get up high and avoid each other when moving about is an invaluable resource.”
