Cats Protection is reminding people not to give chocolate to cats as it can be extremely dangerous for them.

The charity says chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine which is toxic to cats. Levels vary between products, with darker chocolate being the most dangerous. 

Even small amounts can be harmful, especially for smaller cats, and may cause symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, a rapid heartbeat and in severe cases, seizures.

Sarah Merrett, Head of Cat Welfare Engagement for Cats Protection says: “To help you and your cat enjoy a safe and happy Easter, keep all Easter eggs well out of the reach of your cat and ensure no chocolate is left behind when you clear away the packaging.

“If you think your cat may have eaten chocolate, contact your vet straight away, even if they’re not showing symptoms. Early advice and treatment can help ensure the best possible outcome for your cat. 

“If you’d like to give your cat a special treat at Easter, choose products that are specifically formulated for cats or labelled “cat safe”. Remember to check the calories and reduce their usual food a little to avoid overfeeding.”

Cats Protection also advises against giving cats dairy products like cheese or milk. While not as dangerous as chocolate, they can still make cats quite unwell.
