Media statement from Cats Protection regarding cats as sentient beings
Cats Protection has voiced its concern at the news that MPs have voted to reject the inclusion of animal sentience – the admission that animals feel emotion and pain – into the EU Withdrawal Bill.
“We are disappointed that the sentience of animals, including cats, has not been recognised in the EU (Withdrawal) Bill. Previously, Government has asserted that animal sentience was recognised in UK legislation before joining the EU and would be included again in legislation,” the charity said. “At this time the Government appears to have changed its position and we hope the Government will recognise animals as sentient beings within UK law, to ensure we uphold the highest standards of animal welfare.”
